 1. Much, many, a lot of with a noun 

  • Much + uncountable

  1.  I don’t eat much sugar.
  2.  She is ill because she doesn’t drink much water.
  3.  I don’t have much money.
  4.  Hurry up! Friends, there isn’t much time. 

  •  Many + plural nouns

  •  I don’t have many sweets. 
  • Are there many students in this class? 

  •  A lot of + plural and uncountable nouns.

  •  I have got a lot of milk. 
  • They sell a lot of vegetables. 
  • Do we have a lot of homework today? 

         We use much, many and a lot of to talk about a large amount or number. The exact amount or number is not important. 

  •      We can use “a lot of” in positive and negative and questions

  •  Vatanak has got a lot of friends. 
  • She hasn’t got a lot of time. 
  • Are there a lot of students in Krou Yeung school? 

- We usually use much, and many in negative sentence and questions. 

  •  Hurry up! We haven’t got much time. 
  • Are there many students in Japan? 

       Natural English: In everyday English, we don’t use much or many in positive sentences. We prefer a lot of.

  1.  There are a lot of tourists here in summer.

  • Much, many, a lot without a noun

       - We can use much and many without a noun, when it is clear what we are talking about: 
  • Why don't you buy it? It doesn't cost much.
  • 'Can I have some of your candies?' 'No, I haven't got many.
        - When we use a lot without noun, we don't need of:
  • We learnt a lot in today's lesson.

  • How much? or How many?

    We use how much or how many to ask about an exact amount or number.


    - We use how much with uncountable noun:
  • How much sugar do I need to add in soup?
  • How much water does she need?
  • How much milk do we need for the party?

    - We use how many with countable nouns:

  • How many rooms are there in your school?
  • How many books are there in the library?
  • How many teachers are there in your school?

    - We use how much to ask about the price.

  • How much is it? It's twenty dollars?
  • How much money does it cost? It costs twelve dollars?
  • How much money do you spend for your new coat?
