  1. Form

    We use a and an before different sounds

    Before words that begin with                        

  1. A + a consonant sound like b,c,l,m,d,f,g etc. and also U o Eu when they sound like y

  • A cake 
  • A Book
  • A university 
  • A teacher
  • A housewife
  • A nurse
  • A doctor
  • A hat
  • A table
  • A chair

       2. An + a vowel sound: i,e,o,u,a and h when you do not pronounce the h

  • An apple
  • An interesting book
  • An uncle
  • An egg
  • An ant
  • An ice cream
  • An igloo
  1. Usage of a/an

  - We use a/an

  • To talk about one person or thing
  • To describe a person or thing with an adjective
  • To talk about jobs
  • To mean 'one' with fractions or numbers
  • To mean 'each' in measurements

For example:

  • We saw a good film at the cinema yesterday night.
  • Do you live in a house or a flat?
  • She's a nice person that I know.
  • Is that an interesting film?
  • My uncle is a dentist.
  • One and a half, a hundred , a thousand, a million.
  • Twice a day, once a month,  four times a year, 40 kilometers an hour.

Note: 

  • My uncle is dentist 
  • My uncle is a dentist .

We DON'T use a / an

  1. Before plural nouns
  • I like books about history.
  • Children are welcome in this restaurant.
  • Do you like action films?
      2. Before uncountable nouns:
  • Do you take sugar?
  • Teenagers often listen to music.
  • Furniture is expensive these days.
