We use a and an before different sounds
Before words that begin with
- A + a consonant sound like b,c,l,m,d,f,g etc. and also U o Eu when they sound like y
- A cake
- A Book
- A university
- A teacher
- A housewife
- A nurse
- A doctor
- A hat
- A table
- A chair
2. An + a vowel sound: i,e,o,u,a and h when you do not pronounce the h
- An apple
- An interesting book
- An uncle
- An egg
- An ant
- An ice cream
- An igloo
- Usage of a/an
- We use a/an
- To talk about one person or thing
- To describe a person or thing with an adjective
- To talk about jobs
- To mean 'one' with fractions or numbers
- To mean 'each' in measurements
For example:
- We saw a good film at the cinema yesterday night.
- Do you live in a house or a flat?
- She's a nice person that I know.
- Is that an interesting film?
- My uncle is a dentist.
- One and a half, a hundred , a thousand, a million.
- Twice a day, once a month, four times a year, 40 kilometers an hour.

We DON'T use a / an
- Before plural nouns
- I like books about history.
- Children are welcome in this restaurant.
- Do you like action films?
2. Before uncountable nouns:

- Teenagers often listen to music.
